Mahua is found in abundance in forests rich in Chhattisgarh. Mahua is also a means of livelihood for the tribals here. The tribals here collect the Mahua flower and sell it in the market. Used to make deep yellowish mahua flower medicine and country liquor. Now hand sanitizer is being made with Mahua flower in tribal-dominated Jashpur district.

Samarth Jain, a young scientist who makes hand sanitizers to fight coronavirus with mahua flower, says that we know that necessity is the mother of invention. The idea to develop a hand sanitizer from Mahua came when we had a shortage of sanitizers for employees in our petrol pumps.

Samarth Jain has knowledge of pharmaceutical technology and runs a company in Jashpur that manufactures agricultural and herbal related products.

Jain pointed out that Mahua is found in abundance in the Jashpur region which is commonly used by tribals to make indigenous wine. I thought we could use the pure form of Mahua in this time of crisis. I contacted the district administration and the forest department for this. Seeking their cooperation to bring this idea into action.

He said that with the permission of the district administration, we got together with a local self-help group called Singni, which works closely with the forest department, to make sanitizers from Mahua in three days.

Jain said that the forest department has supplied raw materials for this. And so far we have manufactured about 30 liters of hand sanitizer. It is currently being tested. He said that the hand sanitizer made from Mahua has been packed in 100 ml bottles and distributed among the policemen on duty during the lockdown.

Jain said that we are hoping to get a license with the help of district administration for its mass production. Further production will be done by Singani Self Help Group in collaboration with Forest Department. He said that we have the capacity to produce 80 liters of hand sanitizer per day.

The District Magistrate of Jashpur District Nilesh Kumar Kshirsagar appreciated the initiative and said that every person's contribution to the fight against COVID-19 is important. The sanitizer made from Mahua is completely herbal and has no side effects. He said that the alcohol in it is as per WHO guidelines.

The District Magistrate said that initially, we have distributed it among the policemen, and very soon it will start mass production. It will be sold in the market at a reasonable price so that people can take advantage of it. He said that we are preparing to supply it to other places in the state in the coming days.
