According to the National Health Portal of India (NHPI), during the outbreak of acute encephalitis syndrome in Kerala in May 2011, the presence of WNV in clinical samples was confirmed. Since then, cases of WNV encephalitis have been reported regularly in Kerala. Culex mosquito that spreads the WNV is more active in summer.

Padma Shri Dr. K.K., President of Health Care Foundation of India (HCFI) Agarwal says that West Nile fever in summer increases the risk of mosquito-borne infections, so caution should be taken. WNV persists in nature through the transmission cycle between birds and mosquitoes. It can also infect humans, horses, and other mammals.

He told that human beings fall prey to this infection by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The virus can also be spread through contact with other infected animals, their blood or other tissues. It can also be done through organ transplantation, blood transfusion ie transfusion, and breast milk. However, no human-to-human transmission of WNV through accidental contact has been reported. This infection can be like dengue or chikungunya.

Dr. Aggarwal said that it takes 7-12 days to complete the mosquito cycle. Therefore, if any vessel or container that stores water is cleaned once a week, there is no possibility of breeding mosquitoes.

They reported that the initial symptoms of West Nile fever include fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes (only occasionally) and swelling of the lymph glands. As the condition becomes severe, there may be neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, tremors, muscle weakness, and paralysis.

He said, "The most effective way to prevent infection is to avoid mosquito bites. Use this insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants and take all steps to control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors. "

Some suggestions of Dr. Aggarwal

- Mosquitoes can lay eggs in a pot of money plant or in water tanks on the roof if they are not covered properly. If the water of the birds kept on the roof is cleaned every week, otherwise, the mosquitoes can lay eggs in them.

Try using a mosquito net or mosquito repellent

Wearing full-sleeved shirts and trousers can prevent mosquito bites. Mosquito repellent can be used during the day.
